📘 Early Childhood (PK3 – Kindergarten)

Where Learning Begins With Joy, Curiosity, and Faith
At St. John Vianney School, our Early Childhood program is a vibrant community of discovery. We provide a nurturing, experiential foundation where children are seen as active, capable, curious, and beloved children of God. We believe young learners thrive when they are empowered to learn about their world through purposeful inquiry, supported by a secure, predictable routine and a developmentally responsive curriculum woven with faith.
Academic focus
  • Growing in Grace (Religion): PK and Kindergarten use RCL Benziger’s Stories of God’s Love, a joyful, story‑based program introducing children to God’s love, creation, prayer, and the life of Jesus through Scripture stories, songs, hands‑on activities, and daily prayer.
  • Developmentally Responsive Engagement: We meet every child where they are, providing high-quality, developmentally appropriate  experiences that help spark a lifelong love of learning.
  • Immersion in Literacy & Numeracy: Building a strong academic foundation through meaningful, real-world contexts, storytelling, and "hands-on" mathematical thinking.
  • Purposeful Inquiry & Discovery Centers: Our classroom activities and centers are designed to encourage independent problem-solving, creative expression, and collaborative investigation.
  • Social-Emotional Flourishing: Empowering children to navigate their first friendships with empathy, build resilience, and recognize their unique gifts
  • Partnership of Heart & Home: We celebrate families as the child’s primary teachers, maintaining an open and caring dialogue to support every milestone.
Technology, digital citizenship & personalized learning
In our classrooms, technology is an intentional tool for creativity and connection. Our approach aligns with the highest standards of digital wellness, ensuring technology supports—rather than replaces—active, multisensory exploration.
  • Early Digital Readiness: Children begin their journey as "digital explorers," using age-appropriate tools to document their findings and share their unique voices with the community.
  • Interactive Skill-Building: Students use classroom devices for active participation in literacy and numeracy, turning screen time into a collaborative "doing" experience.
  • Individualized Learning Pathways: In Kindergarten, iReady Reading and Math serves as a supportive partner, allowing teachers to celebrate each child’s unique pace and provide the "just-right" challenge for their growth.
  • Foundational Digital Citizenship: We empower our youngest learners to be kind and responsible digital neighbors—learning to treat tools with care, respect others’ work, and practice safe, mindful habits.
The SJV Promise: We use technology mindfully to amplify the world around us. At this age, we ensure that digital tools never replace the imagination sparked by a paintbrush, the physics of a building block, or the warmth of a shared story.

Faith is woven throughout the day through Scripture, prayer, and service‑based learning.
  • Reading fluency, comprehension: Enabling students to "learn to read" and then "read to learn" as they analyze characters, make inferences, summarize text, understand different genres through longer texts and participate in classroom discussions.
  • Foundational writing and composition: Helping students master the writing process, develop paragraph structure and incorporate descriptive language while learning how to effectively create narrative, informational and persuasive writing types
  • Grammar, spelling, and vocabulary development: Building strong English language skills through multisyllabic word study, context‑clue strategies, and intentional practice designed to support accuracy, engagement, and long‑term retention.
  • Mathematics concepts and problem‑solving: Building fluency with basic facts, using visual models to deepen understanding, connecting operations across concepts, and applying mathematical thinking to real‑world scenarios.
  • Science exploration and investigation: Engaging students in hands‑on experiments and inquiry‑based learning across Life, Physical, and Earth & Space Science to build curiosity, scientific reasoning, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
  • Social Studies inquiry and discussion: Guiding students to explore how communities function and why people make the choices they do, while developing critical thinking, thoughtful questioning, and meaningful discussion skills through inquiry‑based learning.
Technology, Digital Citizenship & Personalized Learning
Students in grades 1–3 participate in our 1:1 device program, giving them access to digital tools that enhance learning and build responsible technology habits.
  • Digital Readiness: Introducing students to age‑appropriate digital tools that support interactive lessons, digital writing, and early research skills. Students begin building foundational computer skills as they learn to navigate devices, create simple digital content, and collaborate with peers.
  • Interactive Skill‑Building: Using classroom technology to enhance literacy and numeracy through engaging, hands‑on digital activities. Students practice producing work, exploring information, and understanding basic data as they develop early digital literacy, creativity, and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Individualized Learning Pathways: Leveraging iReady Personalized Instruction to provide targeted Reading and Math lessons tailored to each student’s needs. Teachers use iReady diagnostics and growth data to guide small‑group instruction, monitor progress, and celebrate individual growth.
  • Foundational Digital Citizenship: Teaching students the essentials of safe searching, respectful communication, and responsible device care. As they use technology for research and creation, students learn to evaluate digital information, collaborate responsibly, and build healthy, mindful digital habits.
