Sixth Grade
Curriculum Overview
|
Religion:
Students are given the opportunity to become more familiar with the parts of the Holy Mass. They will gain a better understanding of the Ten Commandments, and how to become a better Christian. Additional weekly question and answer question sessions with our pastor help address other religious topics.
Reading:
Students have the opportunity to read a wide variety ofliterary works with the help of our Heath/Literature series. Provided with four unique textbook, each with its own theme, students will quickly improve their reading ability. Additionally, students will work with age appropriate novels.
Language Arts/Vocabulary:
Students will sharpen their skills by studying the elements of grammar. Students will also have an opportunity to tap into their creative and intellectual side by writing short stories and research papers. Throughout the year the students will aid in choosing vocabulary words that they find interesting and would like to know more about. These words will come mostly from our Reading texts, but they may also come from other classes and life experiences as well.
Computer/Technology:
Become proficient in Microsoft Office: learning skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Learn to make a creative and impressive presentation.
Mathematics:
Learn a solid foundation for algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Participate in hands-on investigation, cooperative learning, and research activities. Make connections to real-life situations, explore and discover practical uses of concepts in today's world. Develop skills in pre-algebra, graphing ordered pairs, computing with integers, and fractions, and problem solving. Master the goals and objectives stated by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Social Studies:
Travel back in time and visit the Caveman days. Learn how first tools were made and discover how technology developed. Jump into exciting times of tomb robbers and great Egyptians Kings as we explore how the Ancient Egyptians built the great pyramids. Experience the peace and serenity of the ways of Ancient India and Ancient China. Fathom the brilliance of Greek and Roman art and literature. Discover how the Middle Ages influenced the Modern Church. Experience philosophy and technology through the mind of the world's greatest inventors, such as Copernicus and Galileo. Understand the oppression of the people in Russia that led to the Russian Revolution. Finally, identify the key people and events of World War I and World War II.
Science:
Learn about the Earth and sky by observing the world around you. Explore the nature of light by studying reflection and refraction and color. Discover the sources of sound by learning about frequency, pitch, and resonance. Understand the composition of matter by discussing the difference between physical and chemical changes. Learn about the properties of acids and bases, and how to tell the difference between the two. Uncover the truth about animal life by studying classification, development, and ecosystems. Examine motion and how it affects today's word including: velocity, acceleration, glaciers, earthquakes, and volcanoes.
