Curriculum Overview
Education Makes Us Who We Are
|
Religion:
Jesus our Guide. Ignatius Press. Introduction to Bible stories and teaching of faith. Weekly visits from Father Garcia to enhance weekly instruction. Class attendance at Mass. We also participate in whole school prayer services.
Reading/Spelling/Grammar:
Houghton Mifflin. A Legacy of Literary reading series. Research based Reading and Language Art instruction. Literature that inspires students to have a life-long desire to read. Additional individual reading of chapter books is greatly encouraged. A comprehensive reading library available in the classroom. Weekly Reader supplements each week. Oral reading of classics to the class each semester.
Vocabulary:
Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop levels three and four. Bi-weekly tests, unit review tests and mastery tests. Additional creative projects used to correspond to vocabulary units.
Social Studies:
MacMillan/McGraw Hill. Regions Near and Far. Study of the regions of the United States. Skill Building. Using maps and globes. Worksheets and test assessments.
Math:
McGraw Hill Mathematics. Follows NCTM standards. Review of addition, subraction, data, statistics and graphing. Multiplication and division facts, probability, fractions, worksheets, quizzes and chapter tests.
Physical Education:
Tuesdays and Fridays 9:30-10:15. Gym uniforms are required.
Art:
Techniques using various mediums are used. Study of famous artists is introduced. Projects reflecting the seasons are encouraged.
Music:
Weekly sessions with the music teacher reviewing Liturgical music.
Classroom Expectations:
Maintaining a learning environment requires students to be respectful of each other and the teacher. Completing and turning in homework in the time planned. Willingness to participation all class activities.
Honor Roll:
A student is rewarded for good effort by studying and maintaining a good grade point average. Honor Roll is based on grade percentages in the fourth grade. If a check mark is received for inappropriate behavior, the student cannot be on the Honor Roll.
Parents:
Parents are asked to take an active roll in the education of their student. Please help us to prepare your student for an experience in learning by:
1.Providing a good breakfast and lunch.
2. Ensuring your student gets enough rest at night. Early to bed!
3. Limit extra curricular activities. School work is the number one priority.
4. Read with or to your students. Encourage individual reading every night. Turn of the video games and television. The wisdom learned from a book can last a lifetime!
