Building a Strong Foundation for Learning
|
Reading:
- Recognize and write all of the letters of the alphabet in upper and lowercase forms.
- Write their first and last name.
- Read required sight words
- Retell a story in sequential order including details.
- Identify the main idea.
Listening and Communication:
- Listens attentively
- Raises his or her hand and waits to speak.
- Follows and repeats spoken directions.
- Engages in question-and-answer dialogue with classmates and teachers.
- Works as part of a team on projects or problem-solving.
- Relates stories, songs, or poems heard on tapes to others.
- Focuses on the lessons being taught.
Phonics:
- Identify sounds corresponding to long and short vowels and consonants.
- Use initial consonant sounds, blends, digraphs, and sound patterns to read words.
English:
- Write simple sentences using site words and phonics skills.
- Identify different types of punctuation such as: period, comma, question mark, apostrophe, and quotation marks.
- Grammar and usage.
Math:
- Sort and classify objects using one or more attributes.
- Recognize and write numbers to 100
- Tell when one number is greater or less than another.
- Count orally by ones, fives, and tens to 100.
- Name ordinal numbers first through tenth.
- Perform addition and subtraction to 20.
- Compare quantities by estimating, weighing, and measuring.
- Use graphs to gather information.
- Recognize patters and shapes.
- Tell time and count money.

Tips to help your 1st Grader at home:
Encourage a love for learning by helping your child in the following ways:
1. Read to your child for at least 15 minutes each day.
2. Keep an upbeat, encouraging attitude about homework and education.
3. Take time to sit down and talk with your child (dinner time) about his day at school.
4. Make sure that your child gets 8-10 hours of sleep every night.
5. Provide a healthy breakfast before school.
6. Foster your child's self-esteem.
Homework:
A homework packet is sent home each Monday through Thursday and is due back the next day.
Suggestions for helping your child with homework:
1. Make sure your child has a quiet well lit place to work.
2. Have materials your child needs such as: paper, pencils, and crayons available.
3. Always express a positive attitude about their homework.
4. Provide guidance when your child asks for help rather than giving them answers.
